Finding disease endotypes via machine learning on multiomic data from biobanks

Our main research aim is to discover, understand, and measure mechanistically meaningful subtypes of a range of diseases. We believe this requires a change from characterizing diseases not by their observed clinical phenotype, but by their molecular and biological endotype. This term, coined about asthma in 2008, incorporates the need to discover both these disease subtypes themselves as well as routinely measurable, actionable biomarkers of those subtypes that can guide better treatment for patients.

We are based at the ELLIS Institute Finland, the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM), and the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki. This environment combines advantages of a new national research initiative into the fundamentals of applied AI with biobank-scale genomic research and the clinical reach of Finland's largest academic medical center.
